Fremontodendron 'California Glory'

Fremontodendron 'California Glory' - Flannel Bush
This hybrid of Fremontodendron californicum and F. mexicanum can reach 20 feet tall by as wide. The velvety, deeply five-lobed leaves sparsely cover the branches and a great abundance of 3-4 inch wide lemon-yellow flowers with a reddish tinge to the outside of the petals that are displayed in spring and summer. Ideally suited to a well drained soil in full sun with no supplementary water. It is hardy to around 15 degrees F. The fuzz (stellate hairs) on the leaves can be very irritating to the skin, and protection should be worn for the eyes if a person needs to work with this plant. This large evergreen shrub is displayed on the cover of the 40th edition of Sunset Western Garden Book. This plant was named and introduced by the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in 1962. It is the winner of the Award of Garden Merit from the California Horticultural Society in 1965 and received a First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1967.
