Evergreen shrub

Heteromeles arbutifolia - Toyon

Heteromeles arbutifolia - Toyon
A California native evergreen shrub that grows to a dense 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Older plants can be taller and trained into small trees. The small white flowers in summer produce bright red berries in the winter. Other common names for Heteromeles is California Holly and Christmas Berry. Plant in full sun to partial shade. It is drought tolerant after the first few years, but tolerates some water if drainage is good. Attracts birds into the garden. Toyon is native to much of California and into the southwest corner of Oregon. Great hedge plant if mixed with Coffeeberry and Ceanothus. Fire resistant if watered a little every two weeks during spring and summer. It likes full sun, tolerates full shade. The berries are edible but awful and contain cyanide compounds that can kill you if you eat too many. Better for the birds. Deer will eat this on bad years. If you protect it for 3-4 years and get it well established they don't hurt it very much (they eat the new growth only).
