Cupressus guadalupensis ''Greenlee''s Blue Rocket'' - Greenlee''s Blue Rocket This is an evergreen upright growing tree with silvery gray foliage. This particular form was selected by John Greenlee from a group of seedlings. The oldest planted specimen exhibits a narrower growth habit than is typical. Although ultimate height and width are unknown it will probably grow to about 45 feet tall by 6-8 feet wide. In its'' native habitat on Guadalupe Island off of Baja California the species is known to reach nearly 60 feet tall with a broad rounded head. Plant in full sun. This tree is drought tolerant with a cold hardiness of 15 degrees F. Closely related to the Tecate Cypress, Cupressus guadalupensis var. forbesii which has a range on the inland from Mexico into southern California.
Cupressus macrocarpa - Monterey Cypress A beautiful wind-sculpted 40 foot evergreen tree that is native to the Monterey Peninsula. As a young tree it is pyramidal but with age and winds it is transformed into it''''s well-known striking and picturesque form. Plant in full sun. Drought tolerant. Does best in windy coastal areas, where it is less susceptible to Coryneum Canker (Seiridium cardinale), a bark killing fungus that has killed off many Monterey Cypress, Italian Cypress and Leyland Cypress. It has been speculated that coastal plantings are better because the salt laden coastal winds decreases the fungal spore viability.
Cupressus macrocarpa 'Lemon Yellow' - Yellow Cypress This name is recognizably incorrect - This plant was given to us by John Greenlee unnamed but is clearly a Cupresus macrocarpa selection. John got the plant from Allen C. Haskell Horticulturalists, Inc, a renown nursery in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The plant is upright and conical with good yellow foliage that is strongly lemon scented. Recently this plant was noted at Suncrest Nursery labeled as 'Citriodora'. Nevin Smith of Suncrest nursery said that the plant came from Arie Lerner of Israel who in turn told me that the plant is Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest' and that it will get to 30 feet tall while remaining conical in shape.
